We think our film Amira & Sam is something truly special. And, fittingly, Drafthouse Films is doing something special to honor the movie: we're offering a military date night for service members who go see Amira & Sam during its opening weekend.
Amira & Sam is written and directed by Sean Mullin, a former army officer and 9/11 first responder, and it tells the story of Sam, an army veteran played by Martin Starr, and his romance with Amira, an Iraqi immigrant living in New York City (Dina Shihabi). It's a funny, warm, completely unusual take on both the home-from-war genre and the romantic comedy, and it's we're so pleased to celebrate the film this way.

Special Opening Weekend Ticketing Offer For Nation’s Military at Select Theaters
AUSTIN, TX (January 21, 2014) – For the theatrical opening weekend of Drafthouse Films’ Amira & Sam all active duty and veteran military service members will be able to bring a date to see the film for free. Service members can present a valid Military ID at the box office to receive a free ticket with the purchase of a ticket to see Amira & Sam. The film opens in select theaters across the country and on demand on January 30. A list of participating theaters for the Amira & Sam “Military Date Night” offer can be found below.
Amira & Sam, winner of a half dozen top prizes at festivals across the country, is a smart, sweet and refreshing take on the romantic comedy genre. The story of a war veteran falling in love with an immigrant is infused with authenticity thanks to the unique background of writer/director Sean Mullin. Sean is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point and Captain in the New York Army National Guard, where he was a first responder on September 11th. For almost a year, he spent his days working as the Officer in Charge of the soldiers down at Ground Zero, and his nights performing stand-up comedy.
“Most ‘soldier-coming-home-from-war’ films deal with a soldier battling PTSD, but I wanted to flip that well-worn premise on its head: what if the soldier who returns if fine, but it's his country that's lost its mind? America was built on the backs of immigrants and protected by the courage of veterans, yet both of these groups have grown increasingly marginalized in today's society. I decided that the best way for me to explore such complex issues in the context of an independent film was to create an intimate love story with universal implications,” said Mullin.
Here is a list of all theaters participating in the “Military Date Night” special offer for opening weekend. Offer for a free ticket to Amira & Sam with purchase is valid for each participating theater’s opening weekend (Fri – Sun) with Military ID presented at the box office. In NY and LA there will be in-theater Q&As with talent from the film.
